Hey! You're a relatively new deviant, I see. If you're having trouble with Photoshop, have you ever tried Gimp? There is a bit of a learning curve, but it's a free download, and they say it has many of the same features as Photoshop.

I'm sorry to read about your dog. We had a cat put down just a few weeks ago. Her name was Silver; she had been sick for years, though.
